We want to make a difference in every girl child
Sanitary towels are a necessity in every girl child when they start to go on their menstruation cycle. Not every girl is lucky enough to afford them and others end up using newspapers or a piece of clothing.
#Insight had a chat with Sandile Nkosi, born and bred in
Madadeni, a township situated in Newcastle North of KwaZulu Natal.
"Sandile Nkosi, The founder of the Sanitary Pads Drive" |
He together with his team that constitute of four other members started a sanitary pads drive in order to donate to needy individuals who need this basic necessity.
“I wanted to initially start a Non-Profit Organisation
(NPO), as I was still waiting for the processes to get it registered I thought
that I should start a Facebook Page and start some kind of a sanitary towels
donation drive.” Says Sandile.
Sandile says immediately after he opened the sanitary
pads drive page, more and more people started engaging with him as they were
interested in this initiative.
“Me and my team hustled for donation of pads, also other
people who wished to donate were approaching us on how they can make a
difference.” Says Sandile
He says that they were able to get a number of sanitary
towels in a short space of time and they were able to donate to some orphanages
around Newcastle.
"Above are some of the Orphanages that have benefited from the Sanitary pads drive" |
Sandile says he recently engaged with a nurse from Nongoma who was telling him that she is proud of his initiative as they are also in need of such a drive in the area as more and more young girls who come to the clinic use a cloth instead of a pad.
“The hard lockdown had a negative impact on us as we were
unable to move around and get more donations and be able to deliver them.” Says
Sandile
He wants to expand this project not only limiting it to
Newcastle residents but to other areas as well and he is pleading with the
business sector to come through and make a difference in a girl child.
“We want to empower every young girl, to make a
difference in their lives and for them to get mentors so that they can grow and
be a shining light to others.” Concludes Sandile.
